Trailblazer Fellowship

The Trailblazer scheme allows motivated, qualified clinicians, to work in practices in areas of socio-economic deprivation. The aim is to develop the skills, knowledge, experience, and resilience to stay working in these challenging, but incredibly rewarding environments and to help practices in under-resourced areas to recruit and retain clinicians.  

NHS England –Midlands are funding one trailblazer fellowship for Derbyshire this year and we want to hear from you if you’re passionate about reducing health inequalities. 

Fellowships can look at any aspect of health, from the provision of vaccination or sexual health programmes to the wider issues of prevention and population health in areas of deprivation

You will have the time to follow a particular interest, network with systemwide colleagues and to make changes that can benefit Derbyshire patients and general practice alike.

The Offer:  

  • Hours: 2 sessions/ 1 day a week
  • Duration: 12 months 
  • Rates: up to £20,102 (depending on role) paid quarterly through practice. 

Key Dates:

  • Interviews (via MS Teams): 15/06/26
  • Induction: 27/07/26
  • Start date: 01/08/26 

Eligibility 

You can apply for this fellowship if you are: 

  • A GP: (salaried GP or partner) within the first 5 years of post CCT and not have previously participated in an NHS England - Midlands Post-CCT Fellowship,  

or; 

  • A non-GP clinician: employed by a practice at AfC Band 6 or higher and hold a BSc in a suitable clinical health profession. 

and  

  • Working at a general practice in Derbyshire whose IMD 2019 score is 30 or above or, where the focus of the fellowship is on the care of vulnerable / marginalised groups and / or a specific focus on tackling health inequalities 
  • Working a minimum of 4 clinical sessions/ 2 days a week 
  • Not be subject to interim suspension under section 41A of the Medical Act 1983 or equivalent   

Expectations 

The successful Fellows will:  

  • Commit to allocated time and follow the Hub+ QI process including adhering to quarterly project reporting schedule over the 12 month period
  • Complete the Fellowship in addition to existing clinical sessions/ working hours
  • Be passionate about inclusive leadership, able to work independently and communicate effectively  

The benefits of being a Trailblazer Fellow 

  • The scheme is supported by a programme of education and support provided by Fairhealth - a registered charity developed and maintained by front line primary care professionals. Fairhealth run a monthly programme that brings together fellows on Trailblazer and other deprivation and health equity focused fellowships
  • The scheme is complimented by regional peer-support and shared learning events. 
  • Fellows are assigned a supervisor / mentor to provide ongoing support 
  • Fellows can access developmental funding for study / courses / certificates
  • The scheme enables fellows to spend time with other relevant health and third sector organisations e.g.,homelessness or drug and alcohol services
