About Hepatitis C Virus Operation Delivery Network (ODN)
Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Clinical Networks (‘Operational Delivery Network’, or ODN) are commissioned to plan, manage and oversee all clinical pathways for HCV in a given geographical area. The Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire Operational Delivery Network involves partnership working between Nottingham University Hospitals, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, and United Lincolnshire Hospitals. The hospitals work closely with partners in community settings to improve testing and access to treatment.
The Opportunity:
We are delighted to offer a Viral Hepatitis C GP Champion role and are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a passion for delivering sustainable system change, improving early diagnosis and reducing long-term morbidity associated with untreated Hepatitis C.
Working in collaboration with the Hepatitis C ODN team and key stakeholders including primary care networks (PCNs), local authorities, and community services the Champion will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, gain valuable experience of system working and contribute to meaningful improvements for patients, staff and communities across Derbyshire.
Key activities will include:
- Delivering educational sessions to GP practices and PCNs
- Supporting case finding initiatives using clinical systems and population health tools
- Acting as a clinical link between primary care and specialist Hepatitis services
- Advising on best practice pathways for testing and referral
- Contributing to local and regional Hepatitis C strategies
The role will be overseen by the ODN with defined objectives and regular review points.
Background:
This programme aligns with national Hepatitis C elimination objectives and supports a population health approach by targeting undiagnosed individuals within primary care.

Key responsibilities of the role will include:
Primary Care Engagement
- Engage directly with GP practices and PCNs across the Nottingham ODN, with special focus on Derbyshire which has been largely untouched due to challenges in engaging GP practices.
- Present details of HCV programme at practice / PCN meetings.
- Support onboarding of practices onto search/testing projects.
Clinical Advocacy
- Promote importance of HCV case finding in primary care.
- Provide reassurance on workload, pathways, and patient safety.
- Act as a clinical point of contact.
Patient Engagement Strategy
- Support development of patient communication approaches.
- Advise on best methods for contacting and recalling patients.
- Promote use of online testing and alternative pathways.
Service Development
- Identify barriers in practices and propose solutions.
- Work with ODN team to adapt the model based on feedback.
- Target high-prevalence practices identified from ED BBV data
Objectives:
The Champion role aims to:
- Drive earlier diagnosis of Hepatitis C through increased testing and targeted case finding.
- Support GP practices to identify, engage and refer patients for specialist assessment and treatment.
- Increase awareness, knowledge and confidence among primary care teams.
- Expand practice engagement in Hepatitis C improvement activities across Derbyshire.
- Contribute to the achievement of local and regional Hepatitis C elimination ambitions and ODN targets.
What we are looking for:
- Passion for improving early diagnosis of Hepatitis C, reducing health inequalities, and delivering sustainable system change.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and collaborative working skills.
- Interest in hepatology or infectious diseases, with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must:
- Be available for interview (via Teams) and induction on the dates published
- Be able to commit to an average of 5 sessions per month over a 12 month period.
- Understand this role will be in addition to existing clinical sessions
- Hold appropriate professional registration and license to practice
- Be a GP currently practising in Derbyshire and working at least 4 clinical sessions/ 2 days a week
- Not be subject to any professional suspension or restriction
- Be passionate about values based, compassionate, inclusive leadership and support the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion
- Understand regular project reporting is required

This role is not an employment position but an opportunity to develop expertise in a specific subject area and share learning with the wider primary care workforce. As such, the Champion remains responsible for any tax and National Insurance liabilities associated with payments received.
