General Practice Pharmacy Educators

Role: X2 Pharmacy Educators – Clinical Pharmacist & Pharmacy Technician

The apprenticeship with Varsity is open to all Clinical Pharmacists and Pharmacy Staff working in General Practice / PCNs who are supporting or aspiring to support teaching, education, supervision teaching and staff development. Alongside this scheme, The Hub Plus will support 2 roles (Clinical Pharmacist and/or Pharmacy Technician) with an additional enhanced release scheme.

We are inviting expressions of interest from any role working in General Practice across Derbyshire to apply for a General Practice Pharmacy Educator programme.

This programme is designed to build education and supervision capacity within primary care pharmacy, strengthen practice-based learning environments and support the development of the future pharmacy workforce across neighbourhoods.

Background:

Primary care pharmacy continues to expand rapidly under ARRS, but:

  • Educational capacity is inconsistent
  • Supervision and placements can be challenging to provide properly
  • There is growing demand for structured training for:
  • Newly qualified pharmacists & Pharmacy Technicians
  • Foundation pharmacists
  • Advanced practice pathways
  • Career pathways for all Pharmacy and Meds Management roles within and beyond General Practice.

This opportunity responds by developing General Practice Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians as educators aligned to neighbourhood working. The key requirement is that your role includes supporting the learning and development of others.

A new Level 5 Educator advanced apprenticeship is being launched for those interested in teaching from JUCD, subject to sufficient demand for the pilot cohort. Details attached from Varsity Training. All Pharmacy staff across DNL can apply, but The Hub Plus is offering 2 posts for Clinical Pharmacist and/ or Pharmacy Technician this enhanced programme to release time to study for the 14 month apprenticeship and the opportunity to deliver training and education through The Hub Plus training arm whilst receiving mentorship and guidance.

Educator Overview:

The programme responds to a system offer for Level 5 Educator Apprenticeship mapped to the Learning and Skills Teacher framework. It is designed for health and care professionals acting as educator and includes;

  • Tailored workshops and a structured portfolio
  • Funded through the apprenticeship levy (including gifted levy where applicable
  • This is a pilot cohort, facilitated by the Joined-Up Care Derbyshire Pharmacy Faculty, with the aim of establishing future intakes.
  • Primary Care colleagues may access additional support through The Hub Plus

It includes attendance at workshops and written and practical elements and formal end-point assessments, further information will be given once expressions of interest are received.

The Expectations

The successful Pharmacy Educators will:

  • Attend all workshops and assignments for the L5 Educator Apprenticeship programme including successful completion of the end point assessment
  • Receive 7.5 hours (pro rata for part time staff) per week over a 14-month period
  • Agree a target for number of staff/ teaching sessions supported through education and training both within your PCN community and to Derbyshire Pharmacy education sessions via The Hub Plus
  • For those in a registered profession, to complete the supervision/educator e-learning from The Hub Plus
  • Collaborate with your PCN neighbourhood leadership to support integrated working including supervision and education
  • Deliver teaching sessions (either series or standalone sessions) that improves patient care, community delivery or preventative healthcare and fits in the Pharmacy priorities. For example; meds optimisation, high risk prescribing, long term conditions management (hypertension, diabetes, CVD, lipid, COPD/asthma), safe repeat prescribing, reducing medicines waste, prescription queries, consultation models, prescribing audits, working with community pharmacy, shared care, QI project.
  • Champion compassionate, inclusive, and values-based leadership
  • Share learning and progress on course through quarterly reporting and catch up meetings with Hub Plus staff
  • Champion integrated working and support system-wide improvement

Role Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a current General Practice employed Clinical Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician working within Derbyshire
  • Be able to commit to the apprenticeship conditions i.e. working 20% off the job hours per week across 14 months (7.5 hours for full time, pro rata for part time staff) ensuring any model will give enough hours for successful commitment and completion of programme coupled with work duties
  • Where relevant, aactively registered with an appropriate professional body (General Pharmaceutical Council/ Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK
  • Do not hold currently a formal teaching qualification but aspire to achieve one
  • Planning to stay in Derbyshire for at least the next 5 years
  • Have full sponsorship from your employer
  • Where relevant, not be subject to any interim suspension under section 41A of the Medical Act 1983 or equivalent
  • Commit to allocated time and follow the Hub+ and JUCD QI process including adhering to quarterly project reporting schedules
  • Be a confident communicator
  • Be passionate about providing support as an educator and developing confidence and competence in delivering teaching and education
  • Able to work independentlyCommitted to addressing health inequalities and improving community outcomes

The Hub Plus Offer

Hours: Maximum 7.5 hours per week with the funding going directly to your practice or employer for release.

Duration: Learning agreement contract for a 14-month programme from commencement date between The Hub Plus, Learner and Employer. Any non attendance, non completion or withdrawal in the programme will result in reconciliation of any funding owed.

Support and Development

Educators will be supported by The Hub Plus, Varsity training and the Pharmacy Faculty Lead. Educators will have access to mentorship, learning resources, and access to QI support. They can also attend action learning groups, to problem-solve, provide mutual support and accountability as well as career development and mentorship. The Hub Plus will be able to provide opportunities to practice teaching skills and to receive feedback as part of our QA process.

  • Places will be considered across healthcare sectors, roles and geographies as part of a fair process. Minimum numbers are required for the cohort to proceed.
  • The Hub Plus will require a quick interview/ selection process on the 2 funded posts to confirm funding

  • Learner agreement contract with Learner/Employer and The Hub Plus and enrollment on the Apprenticeship
