Nursing in General Practice

Nursing in general practice offers a dynamic and fulfilling career within primary care, supporting individuals, families, and communities across the lifespan. From newly qualified nurses to highly experienced practitioners, general practice provides opportunities to develop a broad range of clinical skills, build long-term relationships with patients, and deliver preventative, person-centred care.

Newly qualified nurses are supported to transition into primary care through structured learning, supervision, and mentorship, developing confidence in core clinical skills and long-term condition management. As experience grows, nurses can progress into advanced, specialist, and leadership roles, contributing to service development, education, and the wider primary care workforce. General practice nursing plays a vital role within multidisciplinary teams, helping to improve population health and shape the future of community-based care.

Choosing a career in general practice nursing offers a unique opportunity to:

  • Build Long-Term Patient Relationships: Engage with patients over time, fostering continuity of care and developing strong, trusting relationships.
  • Diverse Clinical Experience: Gain experience in managing a variety of health issues, from chronic disease management to health promotion and preventive care.
  • Community Impact: Play a vital role in improving community health outcomes through education, advocacy, and direct patient care.
  • Professional Growth: Access numerous opportunities for professional development and specialisation within the primary care setting with ongoing support and training availiable from The Hub Plus.
