HCA New immunisers’ (2-day) - Foundation Course

Please note this course runs for one and a half days. Day 1 is 09:30-16:30 and for Day 2 it is 09:30-12:30.

This training is ideal for health care practitioners (HCA & Nurse Associate) who are new to the administration of injections and immunisations.

Aim of course: To provide a suitable level of theoretical knowledge & basic practical training to practitioners to ensure they are able to administer intramuscular injections safely into the deltoid area.

The course covers:

Following the training, delegates will be expected to take the knowledge from this training in order to administer vaccines safely in practice. They will be required to identify a mentor (registered practitioner) who is able to assess their competence in giving immunisations within practice, using a recognised competence document that will be introduced during the training.

After this course has been completed, we recommend that all HCA's attend a Influenza Immunisation, Pneumococcal, B12, COVID and Shingles Update annually.

  • The immune system & its role in preventing disease
  • How vaccines work
  • The diseases and vaccines they may be administering (influenza, COVID-19, shingles, pneumococcal, B12 and nasal flu vaccination for children)
  • Correct storage & handling of vaccines
  • Legal issues, including consent, accountability, patient specific directions
  • Recognizing and dealing with adverse events following immunisation (including anaphylaxis)
  • Correct administration of IM injection (including practical session)
  • Documentation
  • Updates required

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the training delegates will:

  1. Have an awareness of the immune system & its role in preventing disease
  2. Have an awareness of how vaccines work
  3. Be able to discuss the diseases they will be vaccinating against
  4. Understand the vaccines they may be administering as part of the adult immunisation programmes. These include: Influenza vaccine for adults and children, Pneumococcal vaccine for adults, Shingles vaccine for adults, B12 injections for adults
  5. Have an awareness of the information available and where to signpost patients requiring travel advice
  6. Be able to list the true contraindications to vaccines (including vaccines contraindicated in immunosuppressed patients)
  7. Be aware of the correct storage and handling of vaccines & what to do in the event of a cold chain incident
  8. Be aware of the legal issues surrounding administration of vaccines (including consent, accountability, policies, patient specific directions, patient group directions)
  9. Be aware of recent issues regarding vaccinations, including cold chain incidents
  10. Be aware of how to recognise & deal with adverse events following immunisation, including anaphylaxis
  11. Demonstrate the correct administration of intramuscular injections (Practical session)
  12. Be aware of the documentation required following immunisations
  13. Be aware of updates required and completion of competence document.

Special Instructions

This Training MUST be accessed on a PC, laptop or large screen tablet (iPad size) and you MUST have a working microphone for this session for group work sections.

This course is primarily for non-registered clinicians and Nursing Associates who are new to immunisations and does not cover the childhood immunisations programme.

This course doesn't cover Travel immunisations.
