Motivational Interviewing in healthcare: A 2 day Introductory Workshop

This 2 day in person Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshop invites participants to work with others around helping people to change. All too often well meaning professionals can see the need for their patients to make changes to their lifestyle, and feel compelled to advise how to do so. For the person less ready to change this often results in them doing the exact opposite! Motivation to change requires a different way of carrying out the consultation, recognising that change is intrinsic and requires the person to be able willing and wanting to make the change. MI works with the person to consider change even when not ready .

The workshop format is highly participative in style. A mixture of didactic presentation, small groups for discussion and skills practice supports adult learning, enabling participants to gain experience through demonstration and practice.

​This objectives of this introductory MI workshop are;
​• To understand the principles and practice of motivational interviewing
​• To reflect on current consultation style and help clinician’s move towards an MI style of practice
​• To recognise and work with ambivalence about change
​• To recognise and use skilful listening to elicit change-talk
​• To support clinicians to begin to use MI into their consultations by using specific skills and strategies to integrate into everyday practice
​• To signpost trainees to continue the learning journey of MI​
