Patient Facing Communications Fellowship

We are inviting expressions of interest from GPs and Clinicians working within Derbyshire to support an innovative communications initiative in collaboration with Public Health colleagues, particularly registrars, and the ICB communications team. 

Background 

Effective communication is central to improving population health outcomes, reducing health inequalities, and empowering patients to make informed decisions. The NHSE 10-year plan and neighbourhood working models emphasise the importance of locally tailored, accessible, and inclusive patient messaging. This fellowship aims to create a suite of customisable, evidence-based public-facing health communications aligned with ICB priorities, delivered in formats that resonate with diverse communities. 
 
We are seeking GPs or Clinicians with a passion for health literacy, equity, and digital engagement to co-lead this work. The successful candidates will work alongside public health registrars, communications leads, and the Hub+ team to develop content such as blogs, webinars, social media campaigns, and video explainers. These resources will be adaptable for local practices, including translation and delivery by familiar clinicians. 

Fellowship Overview 

Since 2018, GPTF has delivered Clinical retention initiatives across Derbyshire, enhancing research, education, coaching, and career development through clinical and non-clinical fellowships. This approach is supported by NHSE’s portfolio working guidance builds retention strategies to support opportunities for our Primary Care Workforce to develop wider interests and skills. 
 
As a Hub Plus Derbyshire Fellow, you will be supported to lead a project that improves patient engagement and health outcomes across the region. 

The Expectations 

The successful Fellow will: 

  • Collaborate with Public Health Registrars and Communications leads
  • Attend relevant ICB and neighbourhood working meetings
  • Co-create a suite of public-facing communications aligned with ICB priorities
  • Ensure content is evidence-based, inclusive, and adaptable for local use and inclusive of patient and community health and social needs
  • With support from expert translation and specialist services, design and deliver content in a wide variety of formats including; language translation, BSL, easy read and clinician-led formats
  • Deliver educational sessions to clinicians on effective patient communication
  • Share learning and complete reporting and evaluation forms at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18 months. Champion inclusive, community-connected general practice

Role Eligibility Criteria 

All applicants must be: 

  • Be able to commit to working 1-2 sessions per week across 12 and potentially subject to a 6-month extension
  • A clinician in a permanent role, locum or bank but working in Derbyshire and actively registered with appropriate professional body
  • Clinicians include GP, ACP, Nurse, Pharmacist or other skilled clinical role
  • Planning to stay in Derbyshire for at least the next 5 years
  • Intending to complete the Fellowship in addition to existing clinical sessions (i.e. a net gain)
  • Not be subject to interim suspension under section 41A of the Medical Act 1983
  • Commit to allocated time and follow the Hub+ QI process including adhering to quarterly project reporting schedule
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively  
  • Excellent communicatation in written, verbal and delivering key messages and presentation Committed to the principles of Inclusive Leadership

Our Offer 

Hours: 4–8 hours weekly (1–2 sessions) 

Duration: Fellowship contract up to 31st March 2027. Pending on budget, progress and re-procurement, fellows may be extended past 31st March 2027. 

Location: Hybrid – Base site RTC, RTC Business Park, London Road, Derby, DE24 8UP 

Contract type: Fellowship agreement as individual contractor paid directly or third-party contractor paid through GP Practice/PCN/Employing organisation. 

Approx rates: Up to £10k per session, total funding £20,000 per fellowship dependent on current salary and experience 

Support and Development 

The fellow will be supported by The Hub Plus. They will have access to mentorship, learning resources, and opportunities to contribute to national policy and practice development.
