General Practice Nurse Fellowship

Background 

This role is essential in addressing the challenges highlighted by national nursing workforce data, which shows increasing pressures on recruitment, retention, and succession planning within General Practice. By joining our team, you will help deliver on key objectives: providing peer support and capacity-building across Derbyshire practices, retaining valuable nursing knowledge, and creating structured pathways for education and development. Your contribution will ensure sustainability in the nursing workforce and strengthen the quality of care for our communities. 

Team Objectives 

  • Provide peer support and capacity-building across Derbyshire practices.
  • Retain valuable nursing knowledge within General Practice in Derbyshire
  • Provide consistent and structured support and education to General Practice Nurses in Derbyshire 

The Expectations 

 The Fellow will: 

  • Develop the GPN Legacy Pathway. Contribute to the creation and implementation of a sustainable pathway for GPN legacy development
  • Support Return to Practice (RTP) Nurses. Offer guidance to nurses undertaking their Return to Practice qualification and contribute to promoting and marketing the RTP programme
  • Collaborate on General Practice Nurse development projects. Work closely with our nursing team and our Hub Plus colleagues to contribute to wider nursing development initiatives
  • Engage in nurse education and workshops. Participate in and deliver educational sessions and workshops on relevant topics, depending on experience and subject knowledge
  • Facilitate the GPN Forum. Plan agendas, host meetings, provide guidance and support to forum members and liaise and escalate any issues identified to the GPN Lead

Role Eligibility Criteria 

All applicants must: 

  • Be able to commit to working 15 hours per week across 12 months and potentially a 6-month extension
  • A General Practice Nurse working in a permanent role, locum or bank but working in Derbyshire and actively registered with appropriate professional body
  • Planning to stay in Derbyshire for at least the next 5 years
  • Intending to complete the Fellowship in addition to existing clinical sessions (i.e. a net gain)
  • Not be subject to interim suspension under section 41A of the Medical Act 1983
  • Commit to allocated time and follow the Hub+ QI process including adhering to quarterly project reporting schedule
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Able to communicate effectively
  • Committed to the principles of Inclusive Leadership

Our Offer 

Hours: 15 hours per week 

Duration: Fellowship contract up to 31st March 2027. Pending on budget, progress and re-procurement, fellows may be extended past 31st March 2027. 

Location: Hybrid – Base site RTC, RTC Business Park, London Road, Derby 

Contract type: Fellowship agreement as individual contractor paid directly or third-party contractor paid through GP Practice/PCN/Employing organisation. 

Approx rates: £30 Per hour 

Support and Development 

The fellow will be supported by Hub+. They will have access to mentorship, learning resources, and opportunities to contribute to national policy and practice development.
