Overview:
The NHS 10 year plan underlines the need to make a move from 'illness to prevention' and also heavily emphasises the importance of understanding and tackling health inequalities. This is often referred to as 'taking a population health approach' but without any specific detail on what this might mean. This introductory session will outline the concepts of the key determinants of health, how these lead to health and care inequalities, and suggests a framework to use to think about how to tackle clinical problems through a population health lens. It will also give a brief introduction to some key concepts such as value-based healthcare, strategic commissioning and population health management.
Learning Objectives:
-Understand what is meant by the 'wider determinants of health' and how these affect health status
-Appreciate the breadth and scope of health inequalities and the extent to which they can affect health outcomes
-Think about some of the key elements of a population health approach, and how these can be used to tackle systemic challenges
Level of Learning:
New starter/introductory
