Aim:
Obesity is increasingly visible in both clinical practice and public discussion, particularly with the growing use of GLP-1–based therapies, yet it is often oversimplified. As these treatments become more widely available, clinicians need to understand obesity as a chronic disease, when and how to prescribe GLP-1 therapies safely, and how best to support patients beyond medication alone.
This session explores the biology of obesity as a chronic condition and examines why GLP-1–based therapies can help some patients navigate an environment shaped by powerful social and commercial determinants of health, factors that contribute to around two-thirds of UK adults living with overweight or obesity.
We will discuss common and less common side effects of tirzepatide and other GLP-1 therapies, including how to recognise and mitigate clinically important risks such as sarcopenia and malnutrition.
Throughout, the focus is practical and patient-centred: using GLP-1 therapy as a springboard to support meaningful, safe, and sustainable improvements in function, quality of life, and long-term health.
Delivered by a Derbyshire GP with an interest in obesity and exercise medicine.
Trainer: Dr Benjamin Tyler Salaried GP Newbold Surgery Strategic Centre for Obesity Professional Education (SCOPE) Certified Trailblazer Fellow Small Groups Tutor University of Sheffield
