Aim:

To develop the competence to safely prepare and administer specialist hormone therapy injections, monitor patient responses, and work within professional scope.


Eligible Roles:

These workshops are open only to HCAs, Nursing Associates, and Student Nursing Associates.

Learning Outcomes:

 Specialist Injections (Prostap, Zoladex)

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the clinical purpose of specialist injections

o Describe the indications for Prostap, Zoladex, and other hormone therapy injections.

o Recognise the expected therapeutic effects and common side effects.


2. Prepare patients safely
o Explain the procedure clearly and obtain valid informed consent.
o Assess for allergies, contraindications, and previous reactions.
o Ensure patient comfort and dignity during the procedure.


3. Prepare and handle medication correctly
o Demonstrate safe preparation of injections, including reconstitution if required.
o Follow local policies for drug storage, labelling, and handling of cytotoxic or specialist medications (if applicable).
o Maintain aseptic technique throughout the process.


4. Administer injections safely

o Identify appropriate injection sites and techniques for subcutaneous or intramuscular administration.

o Demonstrate correct injection technique, including needle safety and disposal.

o Minimise patient discomfort and anxiety during administration.


5. Monitor and manage patient responses

o Recognise immediate adverse reactions (e.g., injection site reactions, allergic responses).

o Provide aftercare advice on side effects and what to report.

o Know when and how to escalate concerns to a supervising clinician.


6. Maintain accurate documentation

o Record the medication, dose, batch number, site, and patient response according to local policy.

o Update treatment schedules and follow-up requirements.


7. Work within professional scope and governance

o Understand own scope of practice and limits of competence.

o Follow organisational protocols, clinical guidelines, and local policies.

o Reflect on practice and participate in competency sign-off where required.
