Aims:

​To equip nursing associates and healthcare support workers with the knowledge and skills to safely prepare patients and record accurate ECGs, while understanding when to escalate concerns.​

Learning Outcomes:

​By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
​1. Understand the purpose of ECGs
​o Describe why ECGs are used in primary care and urgent care settings.
​o Recognise common clinical situations where an ECG may be required.
​2. Prepare patients effectively
​o Explain the procedure clearly to patients to reduce anxiety.
​o Demonstrate correct patient positioning and preparation (skin prep, electrode placement sites, ensuring comfort and privacy).
​3. Perform accurate electrode placement
​o Identify anatomical landmarks for correct lead placement.
​o Apply electrodes and leads correctly to obtain a standard 12-lead ECG.
​o Recognise and avoid common errors (misplacement, loose electrodes, interference).
​4. Operate ECG equipment safely
​o Demonstrate how to set up, check, and operate the ECG machine.
​o Record a high-quality ECG trace with minimal artefact.
​o Troubleshoot basic technical issues.
​5. Recognise when to escalate
​o Identify when an ECG result or patient presentation requires urgent review by a registered nurse, GP, or clinician.
​o Follow local protocols for escalation and documentation.
​6. Maintain patient safety and confidentiality
​o Apply infection prevention measures during the procedure.
​o Ensure patient dignity throughout.
​o Handle and store ECG recordings in line with information governance standards.
​7. Reflect on professional responsibilities
​o Understand scope of practice as a nursing associate or healthcare support worker.
​o Recognise when interpretation or clinical decision-making must be referred to a registered practitioner.
