These workshops are open only to HCAs, Nursing Associates, and Student Nursing Associates.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the principles of wound healing
o Describe the normal stages of wound healing.
o Recognise factors that may delay healing (e.g., diabetes, infection, poor circulation).
2. Prepare patients and equipment safely
o Explain the procedure clearly to patients and obtain valid consent.
o Select and prepare the correct equipment (suture/clip remover, sterile dressing packs, PPE).
o Apply infection prevention and control principles throughout the procedure.
3. Assess the wound prior to removal
o Inspect the wound for signs of healing and complications (e.g., infection, dehiscence).
o Confirm that clip or suture removal is appropriate, within agreed timeframe and care plan.
o Recognise situations where removal should be delayed or referred to a registered nurse/clinician.
4. Perform safe and effective removal
o Demonstrate correct technique for removing different types of sutures (interrupted, continuous) and clips.
o Minimise patient discomfort during the procedure.
o Handle removed materials safely and dispose of them according to policy.
5. Provide appropriate aftercare
o Apply suitable dressings to support wound healing after removal.
o Give clear patient advice on wound care, activity restrictions, and when to seek help.
